The quest for learning requires continuous reading.
Here are a few books I have poured through in the last 6 weeks.
The Oxford Symposium books are fantastic and is a convention of some of the best minds in the worrld of food.
Not the world of cooking, the world of food.
Cooks get too wrapped up in cookbooks. Every now and then, it is important to engage one's mind in other literary pursuits. There is a bigger picture out there beyond the Molteni stove.
The importance of reference books cannot be overemphasised, as much as we all want to glean wisdom from celebrity chef books, it is always nice to find a book whose singular purpose is education. Well perhaps it makes money for someone but DK books has one of the best track record of producing books with goobs of information at bargain prices. This book on herbs provides so much info not only on use, but also propagation. One badass chef in particular I have much respect for who picked herbs on the hillsides of Mugaritz might want to buy this. They are even doing a Morimoto book.

I buy books much faster than I can read them but it never stops me. There is always something to catch up on when there is time. Books are important obviously to see what is going on out there. One certainly cant work in every restaurant or afford to eat everywhere. We should thank chefs for putting thier thoughts and processes on paper. Oh I forgot......we do with our wallets. Books arent cheap but they are worth it. The picture book from Ideasinfood is fabulous, no recipes, just a workout for the brain. Buy it from thier site.

Hope everyone has a great weekend, I will be taking of some time to read and wander around williamsburg looking for decent food. Obviously I love cookbooks and this is one that I am excited about.
It should provide lots of information and inspiration.
I also pickled some cherries and blueberries per the same method as the grapes below in the "Faux-lives" post.
More to come next week.
By the way while you are scoping out the perfect place for your barbecues and discussing the finer points of your burgers and hot dogs, try think about what this holiday is about, present armed forces overseas and veterans.
The book is from Here.
Cheers
